Hi there, I am so glad you are here! I started IC Wellness with you in mind and it’s my desire to see you live a full and healthy life! IC Wellness serves as an online community and resource center offering information, support, help, recipes, and HOPE to those battling interstitial cystitis, chronic UTIs, and autoimmunity.

Interstitial Cystitis (IC/PBS) can be extremely debilitating with symptoms ranging from chronic bladder pain, bladder pressure, urgency, frequency, pelvic pain, lower back pain, and even bladder spasms. IC is a bladder disorder caused by an imbalance in the body, and this imbalance can be the result of multiple factors including:

  • a UTI that was left untreated – standard testing often fails to detect infection
  • Intestinal permeability
  • Neurological damage
  • Toxicity
  • Neurogenic inflammation
  • Physical trauma to the bladder
  • Upregulation of the nervous system
  • Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
  • Histamine intolerance
  • Bladder Mastocytosis
  • Hormone imbalance

In order to minimize symptoms and reverse this syndrome, as well as prevent other chronic illnesses, we must consider the body as a whole and address the root causes of dysfunction and inflammation. Interstitial cystitis can be a difficult condition to treat when viewing bladder dysfunction in isolation from the rest of the body. However, given that the human body is complex and internally integrated, looking at the body as a whole and taking a system-oriented approach has proven to be effective in reversing and even healing IC.

The best approach to our health gets to the root of the problem: removing the culprits that set off our immune system and boosting the sources that strengthen it. The more research is done into diseases, the more we see that inflammation is almost always a leading cause. At IC Wellness, we believe that if we pay attention to diet and lifestyle triggers, we can strengthen the immune system, restoring vitality and health.

If you are struggling with the IC diet and what to eat, we want to help! The IC diet is one of the most confusing and frustrating aspects of having interstitial cystitis. Author and founder Elisabeth Yaotani and integrative and functional nutritionist Brianne Thornton, MS, RD spent more than a year studying IC before joining forces to create The Complete IC Diet Cookbook. Dr. Sula Windgassen, Ph.D., MSc, is part of our team and her experience as a health psychologist and cognitive behavioral therapist has been invaluable. Sula has collaborated in the design, development, and assessment for a range of physical health conditions, including: IBS, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and painful bladder syndrome. Sula’s personal experience of the impact that persistent bladder and pelvic symptoms have on the mind and body has made her a passionate advocate for women’s health.

It is equally as important that you seek out a nutritionist who can help identify food sensitivities and can help customize your diet, taking into consideration your own unique makeup, food and chemical sensitives, nutrient deficiencies, and related health issues. Integrative and functional nutritionist Brianne Thornton, MS, RD, continues to lead the way in helping IC patients through tailored meal plans that meet their specific needs, preferences, and daily life. Brianne remains up to date on the latest testing and when necessary offers her clients MRT testing, which is the most comprehensive and accurate blood test for food sensitivities currently available.

I have had IC for about three years now. It has been such a trying time for me and my family. Elisabeth's book gives me so much hope and makes me strive to do better in regards to my eating and exercise habits. In this book she tells her own personal story of IC and what got her into remission. She is raw and real and so encouraging. Often times it is easy to become depressed and feel like IC is going to be a life long condition filled with hopelessness and despair, but this book has honestly stirred up so much new hope for me! As a current IC patient this book is a must read! Besides all the informative information and considerations it’s heartfelt, genuine & true. Elisabeth made a break through In solving the IC puzzle. I too am following her protocols ... and slowly but surly I am feeling my symptoms subside. So glad I got this recipe book. I’ve been battling with IC for a few years now. Never could find a good cook book with healthy, safe options for me. But this cook book has it! So many great recipes, & resources. Thankful for the author putting this together. I recommend it if you’re having a hard time with what to eat when battling IC!

This was the only book i needed. I read it start to finish, overhauled my diet completely and was able to put my IC into remission! I absolutely believe the connection between IC and diet is grossly dismissed by doctors. Kudos for this life changing book!

I bought this book a few months back, I have read every single recipe and tried dozens. Every single one was delicious. Not only is the food amazing it also is incredibly healthy. I have struggled with hormone disorders and learning to eat healthy while taking supplements and making lifestyle changes. This book provided information for me to do so, while also making me feel like I wasn't missing out. I would recommend this book to everyone, struggling with IC or not this is valuable for learning how to stay healthy and make the right choices when in comes to food. I would also highly recommend reading her book "How I Got My Life Back" it is an incredible backstory on who the author is and how incredibly resilient she has been throughout her battle with IC. It encourages us to take our health into our own hands regardless of the situations that surround us.
